Helpful Hints
The purpose of this course is to provide a solid foundation in the functions of a greenhouse environment and explore plant materials that might be grown in a greenhouse in Alaska for hobby, education, research and profit. Grades will be based on three things:
1. Class participation: 10%. Students must actively participate in classes by sharing information, asking questions, and interacting will all class participants. Absence form class obviously reduced student final grades.
2. Take home exam: 70%. A list of 100 questions will be handed out during the first lecture period. These questions must be completed by each student. THIS IS NOT A TEAM EFFORT! You may use any resources at your disposal and share sources of information with fellow students, but the answers must be yours, alone. All answers must be typewritten. One half point will be deducted for all spelling and grammatical errors. Late papers will not be accepted unless there is a verifiable emergency and arrangements are made with the instructor PRIOR to the deadline. Papers are due the last day of regularly scheduled classes before finals begin.
3. Greenhouse tour participation and write-ups. 20%. Several greenhouse tours are scheduled in the semester, and an information sheet will be handed out prior to the visits. Students must complete the questions during the field trip, then write a one or two page summary of the trip summarizing the answers to the questions. All written answers must be typed.
Grades will be assigned as follows:
A = 100-90 % of total points
B = 89-80
C = 79-70
D = 69-60
F = 59-50
Incomplete grades will only be given where the student has been shown good progress in the course; a C or better grade has been earned to date; and there is a verifiable emergency that prevents the student from completing course assignments.
Students with recognized learning disabilities: If a student enrolled in this class has a learning disability which may interfere with his or her ability to perform any of the work in the course, it is the student's responsibility to inform the UAF Center for Health and Counseling and the course instructor within the first two weeks of class so that accommodations can be agreed upon.
