I took more than 3 rolls of film during the 39 days I was
closed inside Mars Base Zero in 2004. The first roll is mostly
the end
of my sailing trip to Hawaii. Feel free to skip them if you
want...(ie I was lazy and didn't break the roll into 2 files).
After each roll I've listed a few of my favorite photos. If you
click the roll it will take you to the complete roll; if you click on
my favorite photos that will take you to the individual photo.
Roll 1104A
- A good view of the inside. Photo looks NW from square F (see crop layout).
- This photo shows the potatoes after the frost killed most of them (this is square D).
- Although these strawberries didn't contribute much to the diet, they were eagerly awaited, and delightedly consumed.
Roll 1104B
- The rutabega grew very well, but was never worth harvesting--probably not enough light back in this (NE) corner.
- The rubarb swiss chard grew really well--and it was pretty besides!
- Harvesting wheat is a bit of a chore--a lot of work for not very much food. But it sure tasted good, the one time I got to eat it!
- Square F is the square you step into when you exit from the apartment. Consequently there is a lot of stuff there...
- Looking
down the length of the greenhouse, from up in the apartment. Wide
angle lens gives you a good view of squares B, D & F.
- The east end of square E got very little sun, and not very many of these crops produced (only the beets in the lower end of the photo).
Roll 1104C
Roll 1104D
- Plowing was done by shovel. This wasn't as big a task as it sounds; it took me 2 weeks to eat a square of potatoes--and only half an hour to dig it.
- The furnace was not very reliable while I was inside. In this photo I've got it all torn apart to try and figure out why it wouldn't go.
- I just like the tunnel effect in this photo. I was standing in the kitchen when I took it, and it looks west.
- A good view of square D, taken from the loft.
- The plastic tarp that made up the south wall is 18' by 36'. This photo shows the tarp very well.
- I didn't manage to eat these strawberries until after I came out--but I took them home so I could!
- This cauliflower was huge--compare it to the broccoli grown in 2002.
- I am hoping someone will plant square C in potatoes in early May (when I will be out of town), so I left it plowed and the holes ready to just toss the spuds in.
- This wide angle view makes the 7.25 foot wide kitchen look larger than it really is. But I found the size comfortable, and not a problem.
- Another wide angle view of the kitchen.
