Description:
- Square E is the north east square in Mars Base Zero.
- Bounded on the west by square C, and separated from square B with a loose concrete block wall 2 blocks (1.25 feet) high..
- Bounded on the north by the north wall.
- Bounded on the east by the east wall of the greenhouse (the west wall of the apartment/arctic entry).

on the south by square F, and separated from square F with a loose
concrete block wall 2 blocks (1.25 feet) high.
- Soil bed description, from the bottom up:
- Floor
- 2 layers visqueen (plastic sheeting)
- 3" sand
- 10" soil
- Size:
- 11' 6" (3.5 m) east/west by 10' 11" (3.3 m) north/south
- 125.5 square feet (11.55 square meters)
Usage History:
- This soil bed was first filling in the summer of 1999.
- 1999: It was planted with a few misc vegetables.
- 2000: fallow
- 2001: fallow
- 2002: It was planted with wheat on the south (low productivity); green beans
in the middle north (0 productivity) and peas along the N & E edge
(very low productivity). The crop plan.
- 2003: fallow
- 2004:
Green beans, carrots, turnips, rutabegga, broccoli, cauliflower, swiss
chard, onions, cabbage, beets. Only the carrots, cauliflower,
swiss chard and beets were productive.
Fertilization Schedule:
- 1999: filled with soil from the origional garden area. It
is a little low in most things, but it has a good amount of organic
stuff in it so it should provide adequate nutrients.
- 2000: fallow; some weeds (primarily lamb's quarters), but in general too dry for them.
- 2001: ditto.
- 2002: It was watered with Miracle Grow fertilizer about 2 times over the summer.
- 2003: fallow; some weeds (primarily lamb's quarters), but in general too dry for them.
- 2004:
Fertilized with 3 kg 8-32-16 on 5/22/04. It was watered with
Miracle Grow fertilizer (30 gallons) about 5 times over the summer.
