Description:
- Square F is the south eastern most square in Mars Base Zero.
- Bounded on the west by square D, and separated from square D with a loose concrete block wall 2 blocks (1.25 feet) high..
- Bounded
on the north by square E, and separated from square E with a loose
concrete block wall 2 blocks (1.25 feet) high.
- Bounded on the east by the apartment, and separated from the apartment poured concrete block wall 2 feet high.
- Bounded on the south by the south wall, which during the summer
is usually open, and during the winter is usually 1 layer of visqueen
(plastic sheeting).
- This
square has been run as an open square, with pots only. It has
also been used to hold water buckets, fertilizer, tools, etc.
Unfortunately it also tends to collect a lot of rain water; we have to
bail or pump it out rather frequently during the summer.
- Size:
- 11' 7" (3.5 m) east/west by 11' 1" (3.4 m) north/south
- 128 square feet (12 square meters)
Usage History:
- Prior to 2002 it was merely used as a storage area.
- 2002: Sketch of layout. It was also used for storage.
- 2003: fallow
- 2004:
Sunflowers, tomatoes, radishes, cabbage, onions, spinach and lettuce,
all in pots. It was also used for storage of tools, water, etc.
- Planting tray design--trays
built for use in 2005. These trays are on rollers so they can be
moved around to different places to maximize access.
Fertilization Schedule:
Since this area uses pots to date, there has been no specific fertilization.
Potential
Future Plans:
- 2005 Time permitting we'll build planting trays for the entire square.
