42 potato plants were planted (not including the experimental plant--#83--which was transplanted but didn't yield anything)
21 Yukon Gold in the west half
21 Kennebec White in the east half
Total yield = 30.971 Kg
Yukon Gold = 13.455 Kg
Kennebec White = 17.516 Kg
Average
yield per surviving plant = 822 grams/plant (note: this is in spite of
the fact that there were 6 more plants in this square vs square B!)
12 Yukon Gold in the west half = 673 grams/plant
14 Kennebec White in the east half = 973 grams/plant
Discussion:
The Kennebec White did a significantly better than the Yukon Gold; the
yield per plant was about 19% higher. So we feel that, for this square, Kennebec White is the
potato to plant!
Overall yield in this square was a fair amount less than in 2002.
Total yield per square foot was 0.473 pounds/square foot (assuming 144
square feet for the square); in 2002 the Yukon Gold yielded 0.474
pounds
per square foot, or incredibly close to this year. This should
not be a direct comparison though, for we had a number of low-producing
potatoes in square D in 2002. The 0.474 pounds/sf in 2002 is the
average for the whole square; but purple potatoes had only 1/4 of the
productivity of white potatoes in 2002. So we still feel that our
productivity was lower this year than in 2002.
