Description:
- Square D is the middle south square in Mars Base Zero.
- Bounded on the west by square B, and separated from square B with a loose concrete block wall 3 blocks (2 feet) high..
- Bounded
on the north by square C, and separated from square C with a loose
concrete block wall 2 blocks (1.25 feet) high. On top of this
wall is a 2"x6" plank to make it easier to walk down, for this is the
route used to access the back area of the structure.
- Bounded on the east by square F, and separated from square F with a loose concrete block wall 2 blocks (1.25 feet) high.
- Bounded on the south by the south wall, which during the summer
is usually open, and during the winter is usually 1 layer of visqueen
(plastic sheeting).
- Soil bed description, from the bottom up:
- Floor
- 2 layers visqueen (plastic sheeting)
- 3" sand
- 10" soil
- Size:
- 11' 9.5" (3.6 m) east/west by 11' 7" (3.5 m) north/south
- 135.6 square feet (12.6 square meters)
Usage History:
- This soil bed was first filling in the summer of 1999.
- 1999: It was planted in potatoes.
- 2000: fallow
- 2001: fallow

- 2003: fallow
- 2004: Potatoes.
Fertilization Schedule:
- 1999: filled with soil from the origional garden area. It
is a little low in most things, but it has a good amount of organic
stuff in it so it should provide adequate nutrients.
- 2000: fallow; lots of weeds (primarily lamb's quarters).
- 2001: ditto.
- 2002: It was watered with Miracle Grow fertilizer about 2 times over the summer.
- 2003: fallow; lots of weeds (primarily lamb's quarters).
- 2004:
Fertilized with 3 kg 8-32-16 on 5/22/04. It was watered with
Miracle Grow fertilizer (30 gallons) about 5 times over the summer.
Potential
Future Plans:
- 2005 wheat or barley?
- It is getting very low on organics; the soil is no longer nice and fluffy. Need to add in compost ASAP.
